The root of Naikan as the basis of Naikan Therapy lie in the teaching of the Buddha with regard to human suffering (birth, aging, illness, death) and the path to inner peace. I think that the object of Naikan is the realization of the true self ,the actualization of the total life released from ego restrictions. We can say that Naikan is a fundamental ,universal means of self-exploration. So it has wide clinical application and flexibility in psychotherapy over time. When Naikan is considered as psychotherapy, it is necessary to analyze scientifically its effects on mental change and clinical effectiveness. So considering Naikan as psychotherapy I wish to introduce my understanding in relation to Morita Therapy, another therapy rooted in Eastern culuture. Next I seek to explain the mechanism of mental change through Naikan experience and clinical adaptation. After discussing the current theme of Naikan therapy ,I would finally like to consider the meaning of illness, and summarize the application of Naikan based on life- span development in transpersonal psychology.

心理療法としての内観の適用をめぐって
1,身体内観 Naikan to One’s Own Body
2,The Application of Naikan Therapy in China Shanghai Mental Health Center, China (上海精神衛生中心教授) Zu Cheng Wang(王 祖承)
Naikan therapy, a psychotherapy with 60 years history was originally developed in Japan by Mr, Ishin Yoshimoto. At present, it is being gradually spreaded and developed in China. Naikan therapy helps us to recognize the deficiency of our inner world by introspection or self-reflection. The main method is to examine yourself in regard to the relationships with people important to you in your life in the context of specific themes. The themes are“What have you received from a particular person in your life?”“What have you returned to that person?”“What troubles and difficulties have you made to that person?”. People can discover and penetrate themselves by self-examination and then make a deeper sense of gratitude and appreciation for others. As a result, the affectionateness is being inspired and the soul being purified. Therefore, Naikan therapy can make the soul more beautiful. Naikan therapy originally came from the Jodo Shinshu sect. But the Jodo Shinshu sect was developed from the Pure Land sect, which was spreaded from China to Japan in Tang dynasty. So we can say that the earliest theory and philosophy of Naikan therapy was from China. If we want to create a harmonious society, we need harmonious personal relationship. The interpersonal relationship will be better if we use the way that Mr, Ishin Yoshimoto mentioned in our daily life, namely, “the three themes of Naikan” .
3,About Naikan Therapy “Naikan therapy in Japan: Introspection as a way of healing” MAESHIRO Teruaki(真栄城輝明) From Yamato Naikan Center in Nara, Japan(大和内観研修所)
Introduction I am a clinical psychologist. After twenty-four years working in Higashi Kasugai Hospital in Aichi Prefecture, I took my current position as the third director of the Yamato Naikan center in Nara, a place to which the founder of the Naikan method, Ishin Yoshimoto, had devoted his entire life. Yoshimoto was enlightened on November 12th, 1937. He wished to let all the people in the world know this great joy. In Japan, the method has now evolved beyond the religious world and is now used in the industrial, educational and medical worlds as well as correctional institutions across the country. Internationally, Naikan has also gained popularity and now has several established centers across the globe. As Yoshimoto wished, Naikan has spread throughout the world. In this symposium, I will address four points to describe Naikan therapy: 1) Naikan and its founder Yoshimoto, 2) the brief history of Naikan, 3) the system of Naikan, and 4) the internationalization of Naikan.
16:00-17:00 Question and Answer(質疑応答) 1, The answerers are Speaker of the Symposium 2, Japanese Naikan –Therapist Tetuko Takenaka(Hirosaki-oyako-Naikan Center President) 竹中哲子(ひろさき親子内観研修所所長) Tomohiro Nishiyama (Nawate Naikan Center president) 西山知洋(なわて内観研修所所長)
